Biography

My name is Leonel Islas and I am a Biology Major specializing in Molecular Biology at CSU Fullerton. I began my educational experience at Fullerton College, and then transferred to CSU Fullerton to continue my education. I am currently working in Dr. Math P. Cuajungco’s Lab and my HHMI research project is in collaboration with Dr. Maria Linder’s Lab.

Our efforts are focused on sub cloning the human protein Ceruloplasmin into an expression vector that is specially made for use in insect cells. I have already had experience in molecular cloning, though this gene presents various challenges due to its size and the need for a high fidelity replication. The next steps in my project are to use the confirmed recombinant vectors to create a stable cell line that consistently over-expresses our protein of interest and to study the mechanism in which Ceruloplasmin transports its copper throughout the body.
